Montgomery History
The first European settler in this area was Jacob Carpenter, who arrived in 1832. Daniel Gray is credited with establishing the village, which he did in 1835. He named it Montgomery after Montgomery County, New York. Gray started several businesses in the area, including a gristmill that is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Montgomery was incorporated as a village in 1858.
