Taylorville History

Taylorville was founded in 1839 for the purpose of serving as the county seat of Dane County (later renamed Christian County). Dane County was one of the several counties formed through the legislative efforts of Abraham Lincoln. On March 20, 1976, a category 3 tornado hit about 15 miles away from the city's center, injuring 4 people and causing extensive damages.
