Wood Dale History

The area that Wood Dale presently occupies was once inhabited by the Native American tribe of the Winnebago Indians. They used this area as their hunting ground. However, they gave it up after Illinois was declared a state in 1818. The first person to claim land in this area was Hezekiah Dunklee. His land came to be known as Dunklee’s Grove. A large number of German immigrants settled down around Dunklee’s Grove just before the Civil War, resulting in rapid development of the area. In 1928, the Village of Wood Dale was officially incorporated. It was given the status of a city in 1970.
