Charlestown History
The city of Charlestown, which was established in 1808, was named in the honor of one of its surveyors, Charles Beggs. Mills were an important component of the town. Charlestown was also the home of Jonathan Jennings, the first state governor of Indiana. Clark County, in which this city is located, was established in 1801 as a part of the Northwest Territory.
