Elizabethtown History

The city of Elizabethtown is in Hardin County. The city was named after Colonel John Hardin, an Indian fighter who was assassinated by Native Americans while on a peace mission with tribes in Ohio. The city was founded in the year 1779, when the early settlers of the area arrived there. Captain Thomas Helm, Col. Andrew Hynes, and Col. Samuel Haycraft were the early settlers of the city who built forts with blockhouses to use as stockades for defense against Native Americans. This was the first construction made in the area and gradually Elizabethtown became a busy and populated city.
