Harpswell History

Originally the town of Harpswell was inhabited by Native Americans. They called the area Merriconeag. The town was incorporated in 1758 by the Massachusetts General Court and was named after Harpswell, England. The town prospered as industries like farming, fishing and shipbuilding developed.
