Melrose was known first as Ponde Fielde due to the abundance of ponds and streams. It was also called Mystic Side since it is located to the north of the Mystic River. The city got its name from the borough in Melrose, Scotland.The name was suggested by William Bogle who was a native of Scotland and lived in North Malden for many years.
