Harper Woods History
It is believed that the city of Harper Woods was named because it was a wooded area and was situated near Harper Avenue. Harper Avenue was named after Walter Harper, the founder of the nearby Harper Hospital in Detroit. The city was incorporated on February 19, 1951 when the residents of Gratiot Township voted to incorporate it. Harper Woods celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2001.
