It is believed that present day East Rutherford was once home to dinosaurs in the Triassic age, because the sandstones in this region bear the impression of dinosaurs. On April 17, 1889, the area was incorporated as "Boiling Spring Township," a name which was influenced by the presence of a powerful spring of cold water. On May 23, 1893, the community's name was changed to "East Rutherford." Over the years, the town has developed into a successful business and industrial hub.
