Introduction to Keyport, New Jersey
In 1714, the Kearny family settled in the area and established a plantation featuring timber and produce. This plantation was auctioned off more than a century later, and the community of Keyport was established in 1830. It developed into a major shipping and shipbuilding center over the next few decades. The town of Keyport was formed on March 17, 1870. One of the pioneering aviation companies, the Aeromarine Plan & Motor Company, operated in Keyport from 1917 to 1937. On April 2, 1908, Keyport was reincorporated as a borough. The community is nicknamed the "Gateway to the Bayshore" or the "Pearl of the Bayshore".
