Center Moriches History
Center Moriches was named in honor of a Native American who once lived in the area. Col. William Smith purchased land in the Moriches area sometime between 1691 and 1697, but he was unable to retain much of the land because earlier settlers had already claimed the late. When railroad tracks were laid in the area in 1881, this area became a popular vacationing spot for residents of New York City.
