Elmira History
Captain Abraham Miller from the Continental Army was the first settler in this area. He built a cabin and settled here just before the Revolutionary War began. The origin of Elmira goes back to the formation of Chemung County in 1788. It was followed by the establishment of Newtown, which merged with DeWittsburg and Wisnerburg in 1792 to form Newtown Village. In 1808, the Village of Newtown officially changed its name to Elmira. It was incorporated as a city in 1864.
