Hartsdale History
Hartsdale is situated in Westchester County around the Bronx River. The earliest settlers were the Weekquaeskeeks, who belonged to a tribe known as Algonquin. They were followed by British and Dutch settlements, and the region was developed under the Manor system. Hartsdale’s role during the Revolutionary War was quite significant. One of the battles was fought near the Bronx River in 1776. This area was predominantly steeped in farming until about 1865, when the development of New York - Harlem rail road stimulated development into other spheres. The region was named in honor of Robert Hart, who was a landowner.
