Online Colleges in New York

Overview

Online degree programs provide another option for people looking to further their education. The advantages of online education include courses with flexible scheduling and the ability to access degree programs that may not be available locally. This is particularly convenient for people who work during the day or have other obligations that do not allow them to attend traditional campus-based colleges. In online degree programs, students can take classes anywhere they have access to the internet.

Students typically access the classroom through an online portal where they attend classes and can download lectures, assignments and handouts. To promote student-teacher and student-student interactions, online programs often have chat sessions where a minimum level of participation is required. For lectures, some courses have set times that students must attend, while other courses have flexible scheduling where students can download the lectures and study on their own time. Exam types also vary by course and teacher. Some classes allow students to submit tests through the portal (or email) by a specific time, while other classes require students to take tests online during a set time period. For online colleges that have campuses in New York, some classes also allow students to access teachers on campus.

Even if you live in one of the largest cities in New York like Buffalo, New York City, Rochester or Syracuse, online colleges in New York may still be a great option for you. When speaking with an admissions counselor, be sure to ask about how students access their classes, the typical amount of student-teacher and student-student interactions and how students take exams.

Accreditations and affiliations: when speaking with an admissions counselor be sure to ask about the types of accreditations and affiliations the school has completed.
