Introduction to Albemarle, North Carolina
The area now known as the City of Albemarle was originally settled by the mound-building and hunter-gathering Native Americans. It was first settled by the Europeans in the mid 1700s. The area's first post office was established in 1826. At that time, it was named Smith's Store and was part of Montgomery County. Later in 1841, it was ceded to the newly formed Stanly County. Soon after, the city became the county seat of Stanly County. Albemarle was incorporated in 1857 and renamed in honor of George Monck, the Duke of Albemarle.
