The land was considered particularly valuable due to abundant waterpower and lush timber. Elijah Nobles, the first settler, arrived in 1813. The township of Bedford, which was created on April 7, 1823, included the present-day communities of Oakwood Village, Maple Heights, Bedford, Bedford Heights and Walton Hills. Bedford Heights became an independent community and was officially incorporated as a village on February 20, 1951. In 1958, Bedford Heights was granted city status, and the charter took effect in 1960.
