Introduction to Upper Darby, Pennsylvania

Upper Darby Township is in Delaware county. It is in the Philadelphia-Camden metro area, bordering West Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.

Upper Darby History

A group of settlers, who arrived from New Sweden in 1653, set up mills. The Swedes introduced the concept of log cabins and the township has "The Swedish Cabin" which is believed to have been built in 1654. In 1736, Quakers settled and Upper Darby became an active community in the fight against slavery. Upper Darby Township was officially created on August 30th, 1736, following a split from the Darby Township. It was incorporated in 1907. The 20th century witnessed a population explosion in the community, and by the 1960s, Upper Darby had become one of the most populated municipalities in the state.

The American Swedish Historical Museum showcases artifacts and memorabilia depicting the Swedish and Swedish-American historical and cultural heritage. The Caleb Pusey House, Landingford Plantation, Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Esther M. Klein Art Gallery, and Barnes Foundation are several museums and historic sites within 10 miles of Upper Darby. The Independence National Historical Park, which includes the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall, is also close by. The Bellevue State Park features an equestrian facility, nature trails, picnic areas, and a fitness track. The 493-acre Fort Washington State Park offers facilities for group camping, fishing, hiking, and picnicking. Philadelphia Zoo, Longwood Gardens, New Jersey State Aquarium, and Sesame Place are other popular places to visit in the area.
