Mount Pleasant History
The area, which was originally inhabited by the Sewee Indians, was first settled by the Europeans in 1680. At that time, it was known as "North Point." In 1837, the community was officially incorporated as the town of Mount Pleasant. It included the Greenwich village, and eventually annexed the communities of Hibbens Ferry, Hillardsville, Christ Church Parish, and Lucasville. Post Civil War, the area became home to many freed slaves. One of them, Robert Scanlon, became the founder and president of Charleston Land Company. He also established the African-American community of "Scanlonville" in the present-day territory of Mount Pleasant.

Museum On The Common, also located in the town, features exhibits reflecting the cultural and historical background of the South Carolina Lowcountry area. Boone Hall Plantation, another place of historic interest in Mount Pleasant, dates back to the 17th century. It now houses a manor house built in the 1930s. Opportunities to play golf are available at the Patriots Point Golf Course, and Snee Farm Country Club. Shopping can be enjoyed at the Sea Island Shopping Center, Patriots Plaza Shopping Center, Village Pointe Shopping Center, and East Cooper Plaza Shopping Center.
