Sturgis History
Sturgis is the county seat of Meade County. It is said that the area was named in honor of Lt. Jack Sturgis, an officer killed at the battle of Little Bighorn. However, it is also said that the city was named in honor of Major Samuel D. Sturgis, his father. The evolution of the town traces back to the establishment of Fort Sturgis in the year 1876. Sturgis was officially incorporated in 1888.
