Fairmont History
Fairmont was first settled in 1770 by Jonathon Bozarth and his family. It was established in 1820. At that time, the city was known as Middletown and was a part of the Monongalia County. John S. Barnes was the first mayor of the city. The Virginia General Assembly chartered the city as Fairmont in 1843. The city is the county seat of Marion County, which was founded in 1842 and was named after General Francis Marion, who is one of the fathers of the modern guerrilla warfare.
